Vienna Bass&oon Quartet
Das Vienna Bass&oon Quartet wurde 2005 von Richard Galler, dem Solofagottisten der Wr. Symphoniker und Professor an der Wiener Musikuniversität gegründet. Er spielt gemeinsam mit seinen zwei ehemaligen Studenten David Seidel (Professor an der Kunstuniversität Graz – Oberschützen, ehemaliger Solofagottist des ORF RSO-Wien) und Leonard Eröd (Fagottist und Kontrafagottist des ORF RSO-Wien) sowie seinem Kollegen Ernst Weissensteiner dem Solobassisten der Wr. Symphoniker und Professor an der Kunstuniversität Graz.
Das erfolgreiche Debütkonzert fand am 11. Juni 2006 in Graz statt. Auftritte in ganz Österreich für verschiedene Konzertveranstalter folgten. 2023 wird das Ensemble zum ersten Mal in Japan im Rahmen des Festivals San Fagotto gastieren und dort auch die erste CD einspielen.
Die ungewöhnliche Besetzung aus drei Fagotten und einem Kontrabass kann man als Variation des (ebenfalls ungewöhnlichen, aber immerhin etwas üblicheren) Fagottquartetts sehen. Der Streichbass kann hier einerseits mit seiner untersten Oktave die fundamentale Rolle des vierten Fagotts noch weiter vertiefen und andererseits durch seine unterschiedliche Klangfarbe auch in den Mittel- und Oberstimmen den Gesamtklang bereichern.
Das Repertoire des Ensembles lässt sich in mehrere Gruppen teilen: Einerseits sind es Werke für vier, nicht näher bestimmte, tiefe Instrumente (zumeist aus der Barockzeit bis hin zur Wiener Klassik), zweitens Originalwerke für Fagottquartett, sowie die wichtigste Gruppe bestehend aus Bearbeitungen, die Leonard Eröd unter Berücksichtigung der besonderen Spezialitäten der einzelnen Ensemblemitglieder dem Vienna Bass&oon Quartet auf den Leib geschrieben hat und Werke, die für das Vienna Bass&oon Quartet geschrieben wurden.
Vienna Bass&oon Quartet
2005, The Vienna Bass&oon Quartet was founded by Richard Galler, principal bassoonist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Professor of the Vienna Music University. He plays together with his two former students David Seidel (Professor at the University of Arts Graz – Oberschützen, former principal bassoonist of the Vienna Radio-Symphony Orchestra) and Leonard Eröd (bassoonist and contra bassoonist of the Vienna Radio-Symphony Orchestra) as well as with his colleague Ernst Weissensteiner, principal double bass player of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Professor at the University of Arts Graz.
The successful debut took place on June 11th 2006 in Graz. This was followed by numerous appearances for many concert managers all over Austria. In 2023, it will be the first time for this ensemble performing in Japan as guests at the San Fagotto bassoon festival. The Vienna Bassoon Quartet will also record its first CD during that time after the concert in Yokohama.
The unusual cast of three bassoons and one double bass is a kind of variation of the common (although not too often heard) classical bassoon quartet. The string base with its lowest octave (lower than the normal bassoon) is able to amplify the voice of the fourth bassoon and enriches the sound of the ensemble with its colors of sound in its different registers, compared to the low double reeds in many ways.
The repertoire of the ensemble is divided in various groups: pieces for four, not exactly named low instruments (mostly from the baroque and Viennese classical period) as well as original works for bassoon quartet. Probably the most important group of pieces has been arranged by Leonard Eröd. His arrangements are focused on each of the Vienna Bassoon Quartet’s member in their individual instrumental preferences. The last group are for sure pieces, that were composed for the ensemble itself.
